A Tollywood actor, Indrajit Chakraborty, was murdered at his Regent Colony flat in south Kolkata late on Monday. Some of the victim’s friends first found him lying on the bed gagged with his hands and feet tied. They rushed him to MR Bangur Hospital where he was declared brought dead. The apartment was also ransacked and the almirah broken.
With valuables such as a gold chain, earrings, laptop and two cellphones nowhere to be found, Indrajit’s family alleged it to be a case of robbery and murder. While murder for gain might be a possibility, preliminary probe has led police to suspect two youths who were there with the victim when he died. Police are looking for the duo who has gone into hiding.
Indrajit, 29, a zoology graduate from Ballygunge Science College, also taught at Gobindapur Kalicharan Vidyapith in South 24-Paraganas’ Raichak. However, he loved to introduce himself as an actor and not a teacher, said sources close to the youth who had acted as the male lead in at least four Bengali films and many television serials. Originally from Sonarpur, the actor had been staying at the rented apartment since 2010.
According to police, some of Indrajit’s “partners” also stayed with him. Probe revealed that three youths – Debopam Banerjee, Tanay Pal and Gautam Manna alias Biraj – were present in the next room when the victim was killed. One of them told police that two youths came to their flat at 9pm on Monday. While the one named Pavel was known to the three, the other was a first timer.
Soon as Pavel and his friend entered the flat, the trio went into one of the rooms and the door was bolted from outside. This was a regular practice with the youths and thus they did not object. One of them added that Indrajit and the unknown youth locked themselves up in the other room, while Pavel waited in apartment’s lobby.
It was about one and a half hours later that the trio realized they could no more hear any voices. This aroused their suspicion and they started banging on the door, but there was no response. They then called up a friend who rushed to the flat to find the main door open and the almirah ransacked. He let out Banerjee, Pal and Manna who then found Indrajit lying unconscious. He was clad only in his underwear.
Prima facie it seems that Indrajit was strangled and there were no external injury marks on his body other than bruises on his lips, said police. Though they are yet to get the post-mortem report, cops believe that the victim’s “relationships” with his friends might hold the key to the murder mystery.
“Apart from these three friends, the victim had a close relationship with Pavel,” said an investigator. However, Indrajit’s father Partha said the missing valuables and ransacked almirah show that there was robbery. He added that his son had last spoken to his wife around 8.30pm. Indrajit had told his mother that he was having his evening snacks.
It was at 11.55pm that Debopam called up Indrajit’s sister and informed the family of his death.
“We have reasons to suspect the two youths who arrived later and disappeared after the crime,” said Joint CP (Crime) Pallav Kanti Ghosh. Cops are also not ruling out personal enmity among the victim’s friends as a reason behind the murder. But their first priority is to track down Pavel and his friend. A 29-year-old Tollywood actor and teacher has been found murdered in his flat, late on Monday at Regent colony in south Kolkata. The victim Indrajit Chakraborty’s friends found him gagged, hands and limbs were tied behind, lying on his bed. He was taken to MR Bangur hospital where he was declared dead. His family alleged about missing of valuables from the flat what apparently hints towards a murder and robbery. But police have reasons to believe that the victim’s “relationships” with his friends might be a key behind the murder mystery.
Indrajit, a zoology graduate from Ballygunge Science College was a teacher at Gobindapur Kalicharan Vidyapith of Raichak in south 24 Paraganas. Though he originally was from Sonarpur but since 2010 he used to stay at his rented ground floor flat at Regent Colony, where he was found murdered. Indrajit used to love to introduce himself as an actor than a teacher, acted in lead role in at least four Bengali movies and several television serials.
On Monday, around 8.30 pm, he spoke to his mother Indrani and told that he was having snacks. Late at night around 11.55pm, his sister Priyanka received a call from victim’s friend Debopam who informed her about the mishap. Probe revealed that some of his partners used to stay with him at flat. Like other days Debopam Banerjee, Tanay Pal and Gautam Manna alias Biraj – three youths – believed to be “partners’ of the victim was with Indrajit. One of them told police that around 9 pm, two other youths arrived and previous three went to a room. Like regular practice the room was bolted from outside. One of these three told cops that one of the two youths who arrived later was known to them and another was a first timer. Victim reportedly stayed back in another room with the newcomer and another youth who has been identified as Pavel moved to the lobby of the flat.
Nearly one and half hours later, Gautam and two others spotted silence in entire flat and suspected something wrong. They repeatedly knocked the bolted door but none did respond. Gautam then called up one of their friend Neil who was then in a house close to the flat. He came and found the main door unlocked. He went inside and unlocked three. Then they found Indrajit lying on his bed. His mouth was gagged by leucoplast, hands were tied behind with victim’s belt and his legs were also bound with similar cotton belt. Victim was unconscious and they soon shifted him to hospital. Two other youths were not in the room by then.
Police said that he was only in his undergarment when he was taken to hospital. Prima facie revealed that Indrajit was strangulated and no external marks of injuries were found. Only some bruise marks were found on victim’s lips. Till late on Tuesday police did not receive the final findings of post mortem. But the examination of three youths who took the victim to the hospital revealed that the victim was gay. “Like these three friends, Pavel had also a close relationship with the victim,” said one of the investigator. Victim’s father Partha, who works for a private company alleged that some valuables – gold chain, earring, laptop and two cell phones – were missing from the room. The almirah was also ransacked said Partha. The missing valuables apparently hint towards a murder for gain but the statements of victim’s three friends however prodded police to investigate the murder mystery from different angle. “We have reasons suspect two youths who arrived later and disappeared after the crime,” said Joint CP Crime Pallav Kanti Ghosh Police have reasons to suspect that any personal enmity among the victim’s friends could be a reason behind the murder. But before conclusion, police are looking for two disappeared youths to get a clear picture.
